LAMO ANNOUNCES NEW WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH CAL MEN’S WATER POLO PROGRAM

From LAMO Executive Director Guy Baker:

On behalf of Lamorinda Water Polo, I am excited to announce that LAMO and the Cal Men’s Water Polo Program have agreed to begin a formal, working relationship intended to further enhance and promote the development of water polo in the Bay Area.

Working with Cal Men’s Head Water Polo Coach Kirk Everist, LAMO and Cal have agreed to undertake a number of joint projects that will provide our athletes with tremendous opportunities and further enhance their development in our sport, including:

  • LAMO and Cal will jointly host Annual Golden Bear Clinics featuring Coach Kirk Everist and the Cal Men's Water Polo Team. We are working on finalizing the dates for this year. Two clinics will be held each year, one for the 14U/12U/10U boys and girls programs, and a second clinic for the 18U/16U boys and girls programs.

  • The Cal Men’s Team (playing as the Golden Bears during the summer off-season) will be engaging in scrimmages with the LAMO 18U Boys team during the summer season.

  • Cal will be hosting LAMO 14U and 12U boys and girls during the summer season for a clinic at UC Berkeley that will include a tour of Cal’s Spieker Aquatics Center and athletic facilities.

  • Cal coaches and athletes will be attending select LAMO practices to lead and assist with LAMO athlete training.

  • Lazar Andric, Cal’s assistant coach who works with the Cal goalkeepers, will be starting this week as Goalie Coach for the LAMO boys and girls programs. As Cal’s starting goalie, Lazar was named MVP of the 2016 NCAA Championship Tournament, after leading Cal to victory with 30 saves in the finals and semi-finals. We are particularly excited to have in-house goalie coaching at LAMO, and for Lazar to fill that role.

There is a long history of mutually rewarding and beneficial ties between LAMO and the Cal Men’s Water Polo Program. In pursuing this new, formal working relationship between LAMO and the Cal Men’s Program, we are trying to maximize these opportunities in a way that will further strengthen LAMO’s position -- and the Bay Area’s position -- in this growing sport. I am excited that we are taking another important step on the road to make LAMO the premier youth water polo club.

Lamorinda Water Polo is a year-around USA Water Polo club program, and is open to any individual who wants to learn about the sport of water polo and to develop and enhance their skills.
